Season of Creation Every year the Church celebrates the Season of Creation, a time set aside to recognize the gift of creation and our responsibility to care for it. It starts September 1st and concludes on October 4th, the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi. This year is especially critical as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (better known as IPCC) report was released a few years ago and the alarm was sounded for immediate changes. Study after study shows that many of the natural disasters we are experiencing (worse wildfires, more flooding, stronger storms, etc.) are due to human caused climate change. Back in 2016, Pope Francis wrote Laudato Si, an encyclical on caring for the environment and those most vulnerable to climate change. The logo for this year’s celebration is the symbol of Abraham’s tent. We are reminded of the three strangers (“angels”) to whom Abraham and Sarah opened their home. In return for their hospitality they were promised the gift of offspring that would become a great nation. The theme of the open tent is an invitation to us to open ourselves to receive others, including the homeless, the destitute, and the refugee.
